This article describes severe problems that appeared in the relationship of the Moldovan mass media and the political forces that have held political power since the proclamation of the country’s independence in 1991.
Analyzing concrete historical events it is important to underlines that, with regard to the engagement of the journalism with political power there have been predominantly two key issues – a misunderstanding of the role of the democratic mass media and also a lack of a well-formed state policy concerning mass media.
Particularly the article presents details about the relationship between Press and power, the privatisation of the governmental newspapers, the degree of state censorship, the quality of the public television company Teleradio-Moldova, and the activity of mass media during the election campaigns.
